Personality & Traits

General Overview Befitting his occupation, James is uniquely well-spoken. He is polite, personable, and clearly of a certain intellectual caliber, though he goes to great lengths to not show off this trait. He lives a very public life, and is always quick with a smile. He has a talent for speaking and for winning those in disagreement over to his way of thinking.
Strengths & Weaknesses Chen is an incredible public speaker, skilled in oration and able to adapt his way of speaking to his audience. His capability in debate has helped him succeed immensely, enabling him to fortify his charm along with his considerable intellect and wit. These traits have aided in rising prominence as a diplomat, and his proficiency in persuasion and bargaining have made him important allies within the Federation.

Unlike, however, many other politicians, he has never served in Starfleet, choosing instead to forgo a military life in favor of public service. This has presented it's own challenges.
Because of his public lifestyle, maintaining a private life is increasingly difficult.
Ambitions Publicly, his only ambition is to serve the people of the Federation and it's allies.
Privately, he desires the presidency.
Hobbies & Interests Though the tribulations of political life leave little time for hobbies, he does enjoy yachting and sailing when he takes vacations. He also enjoys collecting antique firearms.

Personal History James Wei Chen was born in 2348 in Hong Kong, Earth, to Zhang and Anxi. His father was a manager of shipping routes among Hong Kong's ports, while Anxi was a writer.
When James was ten years old, Anxi passed away after having struggled long with an illness never disclosed by his family. His father never truly recovered from the loss, and spent his remaining days a little hollower than he had been.
Despite this, he had a reasonably happy childhood, developing a lifelong love of the ocean while joining his father at the port.

Academically, he was satisfactory, though not exemplary. When he completed his general schooling, he left Hong Kong for Princeton University. He was accepted, just barely. In his second year, he served as captain of the University chess team. He graduated after three years, majoring in political science.

After completing his education, Chen joined the Bureau of Industrialization as a junior staffer. Eventually, he gained a reputation as a charismatic individual with a penchant for 'getting things done.'
Such was his promise, that John Singh, a former Starfleet admiral, persuaded Chen to join his election campaign.

After Singh's success, Chen made himself invaluable as an aide and, using this status, rose to become Singh's chief of staff. He held this post for just under ten years before running against Singh for his seat on the Council.

During the campaign, Chen distinguished himself as a master of public speaking and debate, besting Singh both politically and in the public consciousness, though always with civility and respect.
Upon James Chen's election, he became the youngest councilor from Earth.

As a councilor, he has become renowned for his pragmatism, speeches and idealism.
