Frontier school marm

Posted on Sun Dec 18th, 2016 @ 5:56pm by

I sometimes feel like I ought to walk around before class with a bell on the end of the stick. Not that my classroom facilities are primitive. Far from it. But I do occasionally feel like a frontier or colony "school marm." At present, I'm responsible for a small group of children, ages four through twelve, and I hold their classes concurrently. And like a school house on the frontier, my charges and I are subject to a more tumultuous environment than a child growing up on one of the major planets in the Federation would be.

Which makes me more confident than ever that I made the right decision, joining the civilian complement of a starship. I suspect that none of my classmates that I graduated with have ever had their students care for a harrid berry plant, or discuss the part that bush's fruit plays in classic Yaderan culture. Or that any of my classmates have ever had to wear so many different 'hats' with so many different ages in a single classroom. But like I said, I haven't regretted a day I've spent on the Vindex.
