Roman, as you requested, I am sending you a communication as soon as I arrived at Starbase Unity. I am scheduled to report aboard the Vindex tomorrow, but I will be utilizing the time to more familiarize myself with the requirements of my duty. One of my instructors at Officer Candidate School advised me that it would behoove me to be able to provide a general expertise as a Science Officer, as well as become more adept in my specialization. Towards that end, I will spend part of this evening reading Eefa Tejana's monograph on the Diffusion Processes of Katterpods.

Also, I saw no reference in any of my manuals to the phrase "Organized Chicken Sh--" that you used in your last correspondence with me. I assumed this is what papa would refer to as colorful Marine language, and thus made no inquiries about it with my instructors. Will you clarify this for me?

I received a communication from an associate of mine from Novosibirsk, Viacheslav Emelianenko, that he has given me partial credit in an upcoming article in the Federation's Journal of Mathematical Physics concerning the theory he has set forth relating to pangeometric movements. He stated that it was our extended discussions on the subject that gave him new insights. I find this puzzling since I declined his requests for a sexual liaison. Do you think this represents a professional gesture on his part, or an attempt at subterfuge? I don't think the latter would be a logical approach, inasmuch as I am currently more than seventy thousand light years away from Viacheslav. However, I am aware there may be signals I am missing or misconstruing. As always, Roman, I rely on you.

I have been informed that a number of personnel assigned to Vindex have pets. I confess I would enjoy having someone like Rystar to share my quarters, but I think the real Rystar would know and would thoroughly disapprove.

It is at this point of our communication that I know I am to express sentimentality. You know how I feel, Roman, though I often feel as if I am a stranger even in my own family. You and they let me know I'm not.
