An Executive Decision

Posted on Wed Sep 21st, 2016 @ 4:12pm by Captain Claudia Ainscow & Commander Akiva ben-Avram

Mission: S1E1 - Booby Trap
Location: Deck 1; Captain's Ready Room
Timeline: Mission Day 7; 12:30

Claudia was surprised by but respected T'Mia's decision to move on from her ship to a new assignment. It wasn't exactly expected but she was now faced with choosing a new First Officer. It took her a while but she had settled on her first port of call - and decided to summon them to her ready room.

=/\="Ainscow to ben-Avram. Sorry to be a pain but I need you in my ready room ASAP"=/\= Claudia said.

=/\= "On my way, Commander." =/\= Akiva made his way to the bridge and buzzed the ready room door. He resisted the urge to fidget it in place.

Claudia called for Akiva to enter her ready room. She'd already done the necessary paperwork to inform Starfleet that T'Mia was moving on and she'd already looked into doing the paperwork for the new incoming first officer whoever it would be.

"Come in!" Claudia called.

Akiva did not wait to sit down before speaking. "Captain, if this is about the potential traitor in Ops, I regret to report that I haven't made any head way. What with all the recent personnel changes, it's really thrown a kink into my internal investigation into who is doing what and where." He coughed. "Not that it's any excuse, of course. Just an update... or a non-update, as it were."

Claudia usually liked to do things informally - but in this particular case she wanted to do things in her ready room.

Claudia smiled. "Please take a seat Mr ben-Avram. It's not about that...whilst I appreciate your work as to ascertaining who it is. I called you here for a completely different reason. Can I get you a drink or something before we start?"

Akiva gulped. His throat did feel a little dry. "Perhaps some water." He thanked the captain with a nod, then waited for her to reveal her reason for summoning him.

Claudia smiled and got two glasses of water for them both - passing one over to Akiva before placing hers down and taking her seat behind her desk again. Once she'd taken a sip she looked at Akiva and told him her reason for calling him to her ready room.

"Well...Lieutenant T'Mia is looking to move on to a new assignment so that leaves the spot of Executive Officer open. Before I look to bring one in from off the ship I'd like to offer the job to you if you'd like to do it. If you want to take some time to think about it before you give me an answer then please do - I know it's a big decision" Claudia said.

Akiva's eyes shot wide open. With the psychological self-flagellation he had inflicted upon himself, he was wondering if he had been on thin ice. He never would have imagined a promotion on the horizon. "I am honored, Captain," he said in the beginning of a polite refusal. Second thoughts gave him pause. Hadn't he set out to expand his own horizon? And to prove that Hebrons had something to contribute to the Federation? His ideas had been often been met with reluctance, whether due to his homeworld or to his eccentricities. Perhaps this could change that. "I..." He took a deep breath to settle the conflict within himself. "I don't need more time, Captain. I accept. I don't know that I am the best choice, but I will serve to the best of my ability."

Claudia smiled. "Excellent - I'll sort out all the paperwork forthwith. If you like you can continue in Operations until such time we find a replacement then we can get that yellow uniform changed for a red one. I was thinking we go for Lieutenant Kaz and merge elements of Strategic Ops into Operations and the rest going over to Intelligence or Tactical to boost numbers there. What do you think?"

Akiva blinked. She really did want his assessment. "I think that sounds ideal," he said. "I can do a staggered hand-off to Lieutenant Kaz while she organizes her department for the merger." Akiva bit his lip for a moment and then continued. "Not to belabor my point from our mission briefing, but T'Mia's departure only emphasizes our profound vulnerability to telepathic subversion. Is there any way we could requisition a telepath from another ship? Perhaps even the Renown?"

Claudia nodded. "I'll have a word with her later and see what we can organise. I'll have your command codes updated to reflect your new position. After all the XO needs to have the ability to issue commands in my absence...that could depend when Nurse Takahashi decides to implement my new health regimen"

Claudia took a sip of her drink before continuing.

"That's a fair point. I'll have to speak to Captain Hutchinson and see if he can help us out - I'm sure he'd be happy to help us out if we explain the situation to him" Claudia finished.

"That sounds fantastic." Akiva blinked repeatedly, struggling to realize that his primary gripe this whole time had been resolved so quickly. He could get used to this. He leaned forward and extended his hand. "Thank you, Commander. For everything."

Claudia smiled and returned the handshake. She had known Akiva for a week - she wasn't expecting him to be her Executive Officer when he arrived - but now he was.

"You're most welcome. Oh and by the way - I forgot nearly something" Claudia replied.

She got something out of her drawer and kept in her hand as she walked around the desk. Once there she took a hollow pip out of her hand and placed it on Akiva's collar next to the two solid ones already affixed.

"Welcome to the club - Lieutenant Commander" Claudia said.

Akiva gasped. "I don't know what to say other than what I've said already," he said. "Just let me know if there's anything I need to start doing."

Claudia smiled at the Vindex's new Executive Officer. She was pleased he had accepted the offer and that he seemed very eager to get started in the next chapter of his career.

"Well - right now I could use somebody out on the bridge because I've got all this paperwork to do. If you could do that for me then that would be a good start" Claudia replied.

Akiva jumped to his feet. "Yes, ma'am!"

Claudia stood up and smiled whilst she watched Akiva leave her office. With a new Executive Officer in place she could carry on as before - a few changes would need to be made to fill in the gaps but Claudia was confident it could be done. Once Akiva had left she went over to the replicator and ordered herself a cup of tea with some biscuits before sitting back down and continuing with her work.
