A Decision

Posted on Mon Nov 7th, 2016 @ 5:25am by Lieutenant Commander Soren Himmel & Captain Claudia Ainscow & Commander Akiva ben-Avram

Mission: S1E2 - Unity
Location: Captain Ainscow's ready room
Timeline: Mission Day 8; 10:30

Claudia had been told by none other than Tolan of a Consortium strike on Starbase Unity. She wanted to head there straight away but she wanted to speak to Akiva and Soren first before going ahead and briefing the rest of the crew with what was happening. She pressed her commbadge and summoned the two officers to her ready room.

=/\="Ainscow to ben-Avram and Himmel. Please come to my ready room immediately"=/\= Claudia said.

Akiva was on his way to Sickbay when the captain contacted him. He tapped his commbadge. =/\=
He did an about face and re-entered the turbolift he had just exited.
The turbolift hummed through the decks, bringing him to the captain's ready room in short order.

Claudia stood up in her ready room and heard the arrival of someone outside. Deciding not to leave them outside waiting she called out to let her expected visitor enter. It was a tense time for Claudia because it was the first time she faced a dilemma as a commanding officer - she knew what she wanted to do but she didn't want to do it without consulting her two most senior officers first.

"Come in!" Claudia called.

Following closely behind Akiva, Himmel just exited the turbolift and walked in behind the Executive Officer.

Claudia watched the two officers enter her ready room. She gestured for them to both sit down in front of her desk so she could share her dilemma with them. They had their orders but even her former CO knew there were times the rule book and orders had to be thrown out of the window.

"Please sit gentlemen. I apologise for distracting you from whatever you were doing but...this is important. I could use your advice" Claudia commented.

"We must always, eh, remain on our toes," Akiva said awkwardly. That particular expression didn't quite come out as intended. "So, what's the situation?"

"I've been informed of a situation occurring at Gavara by not one but two people. The Consortium are planning to attack Starbase Unity - however the problem is that the defence fleet based there is very limited. I know we have our orders but I'm intending to go against them and go and help out - I thought I'd run it past you first in case there's any objections" Claudia replied.

"Absolutely none," Akiva said. "All of our former orders go out the window with the enemy at the gates."

Claudia nodded. "Just what I thought. It'd take us a week or so to get there including a potential rendezvous with two friendly vessels - that's if they're still where Tolan says they are. What do you think Mr Himmel?"

Himmel nodded, "I think it's in our best interest to do what we can. We have one of the newest up-to-date vessels in the fleet, I don't see how we couldn't. The week would allow me to sort out any bugs from our encounter and put us in the best position."

"Glad to hear it. Although it may mean we run at over Warp 9 for that time I won't push it to the limit - especially if you're going to be working on sorting some issues out. I'm pleased that we're all in agreement though...when do you think we can get moving? The Renown says it's nearly ready to get on the move too" Claudia replied.

Himmel acknowledged, "Thankfully the only problem I'm concerned with is impulse drive. I ran a quick diagnostic of all other systems, we'll be fine at warp speeds, Captain."

Claudia smiled. "Excellent news Mr Himmel. Once the crew is briefed we'll need all the power you can give us for the engines - every minute counts. Although they're not showing any signs of leaving yet the sooner we arrive the sooner we can bolster the defence fleet"

"Any idea of what to expect when we get there?" Akiva asked, furling his brow.

Claudia's expression changed - not because it the question had altered her mood - but the sincerity of it was beginning to take its toll on the new qualified commanding officer.

"Tolan believes it could be as many as fifteen enemy ships. Our defence fleet is around twelve ships - and as most of our ships there aren't well armed the fleet wouldn't last very long without support. I think there's about five heavily armed ships at Unity on our side - whereas if Tolan's research is correct then all of The Consortium's fleet are heavily armed. Not really an even contest" Claudia replied.

"Nim'as li," Akiva muttered. He shook his head before saying aloud, "So there's the chance the war could be over before we even get there. If we make all haste and get there without necessary preparations, particularly among the other ships, then we'll stand a greater chance of losing. But if we take too long in preparation, the battle will be over. We'll have to evenly balance our prep time with making all haste."

Claudia nodded. "That's exactly right. As soon as we're done here I will instruct Wilson to set a course for Altor at Warp 9 and we'll get the crew together for a briefing. After that we'll see what cards we've been dealt and play them as best as we can. In a way if they aren't there it'll save us time - but it will reduce our strength so it's a double edged sword really."

"Then there's no time to waste." Akiva bit his lip, but kept his eyes locked on Claudia. He had leaned forward to get up, but caught himself on the arms of the chair. "Is there anything else, Captain?"

Claudia nodded and stood up herself.

"Agreed. I'll call a briefing in about half an hour - in the mean time let's get things rolling and head for Altor first. Mr Himmel we'll need every spare ounce of power for the warp engines"

"ja, you'll have it Captain."

"Thank you gentlemen. See you in half an hour" Claudia replied.
