Do You Need Anything?

Posted on Sat Nov 12th, 2016 @ 9:31pm by Petty Officer 3rd Class Rebecca Ainscow & Lieutenant Elsa Johansson

Mission: S1E2 - Unity
Location: Lieutenant JG Johansson's office
Timeline: Mission Day 8; 09:00

As ordered by Captain Ainscow Rebecca was clutching a PADD which she would note down all the requested resources for each department so they could be allocated. She had never been aboard a Sovereign-class before so she needed a bit of help finding the first person on the list - Lieutenant JG Elsa Johansson who was in charge of the Science department. After asking where Elsa was Becky then had to ask how to get there. Finally after a few wrong turns she made it to the science lab where she looked around for a woman wearing the correct rank insignia.

Almost immediately Rebecca saw her and walked over to the woman and introduced herself whilst trying not to startle the Science Officer who wasn't expecting her to come and ask her what resources she wanted that week. Becky initially thought that most starships didn't have to ration certain resources but it was clear out in the Gamma Quadrant this was the case - even on a ship like the Vindex.

"I'm sorry to interrupt you Lieutenant but Captain Ainscow asked me to drop by and see if there's any extra resources you want. I'm Petty Officer Fuentes - the Captain's new Yeoman" Becky said.

"Excuse me for a moment, Yeoman," Elsa told Fuentes, then turned back to the Science Officer she had been talking to. There was a quick exchange and then Elsa sent the other science personnel on their way.

"Why don't you follow me back to my office, Yeoman, and we can have a cup of tea while we discuss matters."

Rebecca nodded and followed. She supposed that an office seemed a more appropriate place to discuss such a thing seeing as it did concern the limited resources aboard the ship. With the ongoing issue with The Consortium you could never be sure who was listening in.

Elsa entered her office, gesturing for Fuentes to take the seat on the other side of the desk. When Elsa walked over to the replicator, she turned back to Fuentes. "Can I get you something to drink, Yeoman? I've got the replicator able to reproduce a cup of Soderblandning as close as you can get to the real thing."

"That sounds good to me - thank you. I've never tried or heard of it before but I'm always interested in trying new things. That's why I'm out here on this ship instead of back in California like the rest of my family are" Rebecca replied.

"It's a tea blend made in Stockholm," Elsa answered, as she carried two clear cups of a light brown tea from the replicator, putting one in front of Fuentes. "Black tea mixed with tropical fruit and flower petals. Created more than four hundred years. Family legend has it one of my ancestors was the original creator," Elsa added as she took her own seat.

Rebecca smiled. "Thank you"

Rebecca then picked the cup up with both hands and took a sip of the beverage. It was a delicious blend and the tropical fruit in particular was definitely recognisable. She nodded and placed the cup back down on the table and gave her opinion on the tea.

"I like that a lot. You'll have to give me the recipe for that" Becky replied.

Elsa gave Becky a small smile. "The replicator is programmed for it anytime you want it. The actual recipe is a family secret." Elsa took a sip from her cup before continuing. "So this would be my department's wish list for Jul?"

"That sounds like a fair compromise. This would be what you'd like for the next month yes - the Captain said something about allocating them tomorrow and having them ready for me to get them distributed alongside Operations at the start of next week. With the Vindex being such a big ship I wasn't expecting things to be rationed - until the Captain explained what was happening out here" Rebecca replied.

Elsa paused for a moment, then smiled. "My apologies, Yeoman. I wasn't looking for next month. I was hoping for my list of departmental resource 'presents' for Jul. You'd probably say...Navidad?" Elsa replied questioningly. "Anyway, bad pun on my part. And I expected that with the Vindex operating independently for the foreseeable future, the proverbial cupboard would be bare. How about this, Yeoman?" Elsa pulled out a PADD and handed it to the Yeoman. "This is a list of the various projects currently underway or proposed by my department. I've listed them in the order that I think they should receive resources, with those on the top of the list that are highlighted being the ones I believe will be most beneficial to the Vindex in our current situation. The highlighted ones are the ones I will argue that we need. Everything else..." Elsa shrugged before continuing, "Everything else are projects I'd like to see the people in my apartment be able to pursue, but I can understand if the resources aren't there to allow them to. When you're short of bread, you can't use what flour you have to bake cakes."

Rebecca tittered and listened to Elsa and took hold of the PADD she was handed. It seemed like there was a lot on the wish list for the Science department - but after all it was science and there were always a range of things to investigate. It was a department she'd never felt able to excel in but one she had admiration and respect for.

"That seems fine to me. I'll be sure the Captain is directed towards the highlighted projects so she takes those into account" Rebecca replied.

"We all have our dreams, Yeoman. Mine is that the Vindex gets to go back to its primary mission of exploration one day," Elsa said, then gave Rebecca a small smile. "And my scientists get to go back to squabbling about academic deference and cross-discipline encroachments."

Becky nodded. She'd come out into Starfleet to explore - not be a part of fighting people who were supposed to be on their side. She wasn't exploring and she was in the Gamma Quadrant so for now that's what she accepted she was going to be doing.

"I'd like to do some exploring. I've been commissioned for about a month and this is my first assignment...so I haven't seen anything exciting yet. I hope that's going to change sooner rather than later - but I guess what we're doing has to be done" Rebecca replied.

"The Chinese have a curse," Elsa said as she finished her tea. "It's 'May you live in interesting times. I suspect that encompasses exciting times as well. If you don't mind me asking, Yeoman, how are you finding the Vindex otherwise?"

Becky finished taking a long sip of her tea and placed it back down on the desk. It was a really nice blend and even though it was replicated she didn't mind - she hoped to be able to get the real thing one day.

"So far so good. I've only been here about an hour and a half - I didn't even know I was coming until last night and Captain Ainscow didn't even know until I got here so yeah...surprises all round. It's a nice ship though - I think I'll like it here" Rebecca replied.

"I'm sure you will," Elsa replied with a small smile. Standing up, she added, "If there's nothing else I can do for you yeoman, I probably have a few small academic fires to put out."

Rebecca could see that she'd concluded her business with Elsa and that she had other things to be doing - so she picked up her drink and took a few large sips before downing the rest in one go. It was a nice tea and she looked forward to trying it again.

"I don't think there's anything else. If you think of anything else I'm not due to have this on the Captain's desk until this evening - so if you do just give me a call" Becky said with a smile.

"And feel free to call on me as well, Yeoman," Elsa said with a smile.

Becky smiled and collected her PADD before making her way out and onto visit her next intended department head in sickbay. She'd had a nice cup of tea and a chat with Lieutenant Johansson which only added to her positive first impressions of the Vindex.

So far so good.
