A Valuable Addition

Posted on Thu Nov 10th, 2016 @ 8:18pm by Lieutenant JG Annie Wilson & Captain Claudia Ainscow & Lieutenant JG José Muñiz

Mission: S1E2 - Unity
Location: Captain Ainscow's ready room
Timeline: Mission Day 8; 13:30

Claudia was delighted by Ensign Muniz's choice to stay aboard the Vindex and provide some experience for the flight control department. José had been hostile towards Claudia initially due to the nature of their rescue but now that hostility had thawed and José and Claudia were happy to be talking to each other in her ready room.

"It's a fine ship you have here Captain. Certainly a lot more 'space age' than the Renown. The Renown is a fine ship but I'll make no secret of wanting to serve aboard a Sovereign-class. They're in a totally different league to the Excelsior-class" José said.

Claudia smiled. She liked his attitude and now they were getting on well she'd come to like José as a person too. She could understand why he was the way he was initially and fully accepted his apology.

"Thank you Ensign. Captain Hutchinson is sorry to lose you - and so is your brother - but we're happy to have you here. Shall I call Ensign Wilson in so you can get to know her? She's been thrown in at the deep end as department head on her first assignment so I'm sure she'd appreciate the experience and advice you can share with her. She's quite nervous still but she tries her best" Claudia replied.

José nodded. "Absolutely. I'd love to meet her"

=/\="Ainscow to Wilson. Please come to my ready room"=/\= Claudia said.

Annie was already on the bridge when Claudia called her, so getting there quickly wasn't going to be a problem. She turned her chair to the left and stood up, then walking towards Claudia's office wondering why Captain Ainscow wanted to see her, especially as she had already been asked to work with other departments.

Forgetting to knock whilst in a world of her own thinking about what Claudia wanted, she walked in and almost immediately realised she'd forgotten to knock. Annie was glad Claudia wasn't he kind of person to get annoyed over that sort of thing, even if Annie was a little embarrassed about it.

"Here I am, Captain," Annie said. "Sorry about not pressing the bell, I'll try not to do that again."

"Ah Miss Wilson - thank you for coming so quickly. This is Ensign José Muniz who is joining us from the Renown as an extra pair of hands for the flight control department. Mr Muniz this is Ensign Annie Wilson" Claudia replied.

Annie looked at Jose and smiled. She thought he was a very attractive man, but she wasn't interested in relationships, not while she was in Starfleet, anyway.

"Nice to meet you." Annie said, offering Jose a hand shake.

José stood up and smiled at Annie. He returned the handshake he was offered.

"The pleasure is mine Ensign" José said.

Claudia smiled as the two officers greeted eachother before gesturing for them to sit back down for a quick chat before they got back with their respective duties. It was nice to see Annie come out of her shell a little bit more.

"Please sit down - I won't keep you long" Claudia commented.

Annie quickly took a seat, taking the opposite one to the one Jose was sitting in before she arrived. Clearly it wasn't a bad thing, and she felt a lot more relaxed.

José returned to his seat and looked at Claudia waiting to hear what she was going to say.

"José is an experienced officer so he'll be able to help you Annie - don't worry your position as department head isn't affected and won't be unless you ask specifically. Ensign Henley will also be remaining as a conn officer as well as keeping his support craft pilot position as well. As José has not served on a Sovereign-class starship before I'd like you to help him familiarise with the controls" Claudia said.

Annie smiled before she replied, she was really happy to be helping Jose and that Claudia had given her that responsibility, although as she was the department head, she wasn't expecting Claudia to delegate it to anyone else.

"That's fine, Captain, I'm happy to do that." Annie replied.

Claudia smiled. "Glad to hear it. I'll be assigning Mr Muniz to Beta Shift whilst you can keep your Alpha Shift duty"

"How many shifts do you run Captain?" José asked.

Claudia replied. "Three - 08:00 to 16:00, 16:00 to 00:00 and 00:00 to 08:00. I've never felt a four shift rotation is an efficient use of resources - four shifts would mean having to have smaller numbers of personnel on duty during each shift which I am strongly against"

"That sounds good to me. I have to agree with you though - Captain Hutchinson is the same. He likes to run a three shift rotation - the Captain before him on the Renown did the same and that worked well" José responded.

Claudia nodded. "Absolutely. Do either of you have any questions?"

Thinking for a moment, Annie couldn't, so she shook her head.

"No, Captain." Annie said.

José couldn't think of anything he'd already asked. He knew what he was expected to be doing and what duty shift he was going to be working. He'd already been assigned quarters as Claudia had arranged those with operations before he came aboard.

"Not at the moment Captain" José replied.

Claudia smiled. "Excellent - thank you for coming both. Just to reiterate if you need anything you can come and find me or if I'm not available Mr ben-Avram can help you out too if necessary. I'll let you get back to work and Mr Muniz - welcome aboard"

"Gracias Captain" José said.

Annie stood up and waited for Jose to stand up, once he had she walked back out onto the bridge and sat down to show the new flight control officer the console he would be using, she'd had three weeks to get used to it, but Jose wouldn't have the liberty of an extended familiarisation period.

José followed Annie out of Claudia's ready room and out onto the bridge where Annie was going to show him the Vindex's flight control station. José watched as Annie sat down and started to show him the various controls on the console whilst he looked down and nodded each time Annie explained a function to him. He was going to miss the Renown and his brother - but he was looking forward to starting his new challenge.
