I'll Be Right Here

Posted on Fri Dec 9th, 2016 @ 5:49pm by Captain Claudia Ainscow & Petty Officer 3rd Class Rebecca Ainscow

Mission: S1E2 - Unity
Location: Captain Ainscow's ready room
Timeline: Mission Day 10; 10:00

Claudia had left her counselling session with Jaya feeling like she had a lot to think about and went up to her ready room to process it and get her paperwork out of the way before the Vindex left Altor for Starbase Unity. She hasn't seen Rebecca since the night they slept together having managed to avoid facing her Yeoman since then but Claudia decided it was time to speak to her and at least clear the air. At the very least it would make their working relationship more tolerable.

=/\="Ainscow to Fuentes. Please come to my ready room"=/\= Claudia said.

Rebecca was working in the Observation Lounge when she heard Claudia's voice for the first time in 36 hours. She couldn't help but feel her heart soar at hearing Claudia's voice but at the same time she got the impression Claudia didn't want anything else to happen between them.

Becky replied. =/\="On my way"=/\=

Rebecca carried the three PADDs she was working on with her to Claudia's ready room and instead of knocking she walked straight in. Becky looked at Claudia and felt butterflies in her stomach - she wouldn't say it was love but she definitely liked her a lot.

"I thought you were ignoring me Captain...have I done something wrong?" Becky asked.

Claudia stood up and looked at Rebecca and shook her head.

"No. Of course you haven't - I've been thinking about a lot of things and I'm sorry it's appeared like I didn't want to talk to you. I do want to talk to you - that's why you're here now so we can talk about things" Claudia replied.

Rebecca smiled. "I'm glad. You know...you were my first"

"Was I? I'm flattered in that case" Claudia replied.

Rebecca giggled - she loved Claudia's sense of humour. She wasn't expecting a date or anything like that so soon but some clarity about the situation between them. If they were going to have a future as a couple then Becky was prepared to wait.

"So you should be...so...what do you want to talk about exactly?" Rebecca asked.

Claudia sighed. "I don't know how to put this but I really don't know how I feel right now. What happened was really special and I really like you but...I'm not so sure that I'm ready for a relationship right now. You should know that I care about you though Becky. You were there for me when I needed treating like a princess and you did just that. For that I thank you and I can't thank you enough"

"Like what exactly? What's more important than letting me be there for you in whatever way you want me to be? If you don't want a relationship that's fine...but at least give me a reason. You owe me that much at least" Rebecca replied

Claudia lifted up a photo frame from her desk and showed Rebecca the photograph. It was a photograph of Claudia and Grace taken just before Claudia departed to take command of the Vindex. She began to well up but managed to keep herself from crying.

"I have a daughter. Grace. She lives with my sister on Earth but I've arranged for her to come and live with me on the Vindex. I've hardly seen her for the past eight years of her life and although I asked Heidi to look after Grace to keep her safe...I still feel like a bad mother for not being there for her. I've missed out on eight years of her life and I don't want to miss out on any more" Claudia replied.

Rebecca could see Claudia was upset. She walked over to Claudia and hugged her tightly.

"You aren't a bad mother Claudia. You kept her safe from being out here and now you're making it right. Don't ever feel that you have to put me, this ship or anything before Grace because I know she matters to you more than anything else. If you want me to be there for you I will be" Rebecca said.

Claudia couldn't hold back the tears and she cried onto Rebecca's shoulder and returned the hug. Nobody had ever been there for her like Becky had but Claudia felt like she needed to put Grace first and make amends for the eight years of her daughter's life that she lost out on.

"You're amazing...you're there for me when I need someone to talk to and I'll never be able to thank you enough for it. One day when this is all over...we can see what happens" Claudia sobbed.

Rebecca replied. "I'll be right here waiting for you. I can wait...you need to do what you have to do first...but if you need me to talk to or you need a hug and a cry on my shoulder then I'm going to be here for you. I promise...and if you want us to be together then we will be. I think you're an amazing, beautiful and strong woman who I care about so much already"

"Thank you. Nobody has ever said anything like that about me before and it really means a lot..." Claudia sobbed.

Rebecca smiled. "Don't mention it. Any time of day too"

"You're a sweet girl. I couldn't ask for a better Yeoman...or friend" Claudia replied.

Rebecca kept hold of Claudia. She liked hugs and she was pleased when Claudia accepted her offer of one. She accepted it was going to take time if anything romantic was to ever happen between herself and Claudia but Becky knew now that it might take a bit longer again - but she accepted why and even though it wasn't love now - perhaps the time that Claudia wanted to focus on other more important priorities wasn't such a bad thing after all.

"I just like to help people when they need it. As for the other night...I felt special too" Rebecca said.

Claudia smiled. "I'm glad you did Becky. What do you say when this is all over I take you on one of my holodeck programs? I have a nice one of a beach at sunset I think you'd like...and I'll even have Paul prepare a picnic for us. Just to show you how thankful I am"

"You don't have to Claudia. I want to help you because I care" Becky replied.

Claudia nodded. "I insist. I want to show you how grateful I am and do something for you in return"

"Alright. Let me know when you want to do it and I'll keep that evening free" Rebecca responded.

Claudia smiled and let go of Rebecca. She felt a lot better having been able to explain what was going on in her life to Becky and that she fully accepted it. Claudia couldn't ask for a better friend and maybe in the future - partner.

"Thank you Becky. I'm not saying no...just not right now" Claudia said.

Rebecca let go of Claudia too and smiled at the other woman. She lifted her right arm up and dried Claudia's eyes with the cuff of her uniform's right sleeve. If a future between the two was going to happen - not that Becky was ever going to count on it for obvious reasons - she thought Claudia was worth waiting for.

"Whatever happens between us will happen because it's meant to. No matter what though...I'll be right here waiting" Becky replied.

Claudia smiled. "I know. I've believed in fate for a long time and I always will"

"I'll come and check in later to see how you are. I'd love to stay but I've got a load of messages to deliver and there's only so many hours in the day. Remember what I said yeah?" Rebecca said.

Claudia nodded. "Of course - I'm sorry to drag you from your work. I appreciate it too"

Rebecca gave Claudia a kiss on her cheek before turning and heading back to the Observation Lounge to sort through the messages she had been asked to deliver and arrange appointments with Claudia to discuss various matters. Becky felt better about things now that Claudia had explained her sudden unexpected silence - and more so that they were still on good terms. With a smile on her face she got back to work in the hope that it was going to be another good day.
