Mission: S1E2 - Unity
Location: Classroom
Timeline: Mission Day 13; 15:00

Claudia had decided to speak with Janelle Fischer about the two Ktarian children who had beamed back to the Sheaf with Captain Garlake's away team. She had left them in the care of Janelle who was a qualified teacher and was responsible for the education of a small number of children aboard the Vindex. Sooner or later her daughter Grace would be joining the class too.

Entering the classroom Claudia looked around and found Janelle and the two Ktarian children in there as well as a few others. She approached the woman and introduced herself - hoping that they would be able to find out a bit more about the latest arrivals on the Vindex.

"Hello Ms Fischer. I'm Captain Ainscow - I was wondering if we could have a chat?" Claudia said.

"Of course, Captain," Janelle answered. The young teacher turned to her students. "Everyone, you have your assignments, so I expect no problems," she instructed the children. "Laura will be in charge until I get back." An older red-headed human girl beamed at this announcement. "Deedra, why don't you show Liwam how we measure the pH around our Harrid berry bush?" A young nine year old human girl grinned and took the Ktarian girl by the hand over to the potted bush in question.

With a smile, Janelle indicated that Claudia should follow her as the two step out of the classroom.

"What can I do for you, Captain?" Janelle asked.

Claudia smiled. "I was wondering how our latest arrivals are getting on. I've had a look in the database and there doesn't seem to be any information as to their parents or where they were from - so it may be a case of they remain here. Would you be willing to add them to your class on a permanent basis? I'd hate to leave them somewhere that they don't feel safe - at least there they're safe and can make some friends"

"Liwam and Dajorn, sister and brother," Janelle answered. "Beyond that, I couldn't tell you anything. They're keeping calm on the surface, but beneath that..."

Janelle shrugged. "We could get more details if we pushed, but I wouldn't recommend do anything like that for now. They may be acting normally and intermingling with the other children with no problem, but they're still rather fragile. And I have no problem keeping them in my care for as long as you need, Captain."

"At least we know their names which is something. I can't imagine how they're feeling though - from Captain Garlake's report what they found on that freighter wasn't nice and I can't say I blame them for wanting to seek refuge here. I'm willing to let them stay for as long as they wish to stay" Claudia replied.

Claudia then thought of something else - her daughter Grace was coming aboard and Claudia was keen for her to continue her education and she was pleased Janelle had accepted a position on the Vindex.

"Oh...I also meant to ask you if you've got room for another one now Liwam and Dajorn are here. My daughter Grace will be joining us once we can get back through the wormhole and we'll be travelling to Deep Space 9 to collect her and possibly my sister - although I think my sister will probably travel back to Earth once Grace is on the Vindex" Claudia concluded.

"Of course, Captain," Janelle answered. "All I ask is that you forward me her records so that I can set up an appropriate learning track. To be honest, ma'am, the secondary instructor and I are feeling a little under worked."

"I thought ahead. Here you go - she's a bright girl and she's very much like her father. She loves helping people and she's always very well behaved. I just wish he was still here to see what a wonderful daughter he enabled me to have" Claudia said.

Claudia handed Janelle the PADD whilst she was talking. It was up to date to the point of leaving the Alpha Quadrant but Heidi had assured Claudia that she'd bring along Grace's latest records when they travelled to Deep Space 9.

"I'm sure he would be proud," Janelle said as she took the PADD from Claudia. After giving the information on the PADD a cursory examination, she looked up at Claudia and gave the Captain a broad smile. "I'm looking forward to meeting Grace, Captain. She's going to be pleasure to have in my classroom."

Claudia smiled and was pleased by the positive comments from Janelle. She had missed her daughter dearly and was looking forward to catching up and making up for the years she'd missed of Grace's life.

"Thank you. I'm know James would be very proud of her - Grace looks a lot like him - in fact she looks more like him than me to be honest. I'll have to arrange for you and your class to have a tour of the ship once everything has blown over - it might inspire the next generation of Starfleet officers" Claudia replied.

"We look forward to it, Captain." Janelle looked over her shoulder for a moment before asking, "But speaking of my class, Captain, I really do need to be getting back to them."

Claudia smiled and nodded.

"Of course - I apologise for keeping you away from them. If you need anything in the mean time then come and find me. If I'm not available my Yeoman will either try and find me or book an appointment. I have to say I'm a lot more organised since she was assigned to me. Thanks for your time Ms Fischer" Claudia replied.
