Never Alone

Mission: S1E4 - Remnants Of A Lost Cause
Location: Observation Lounge
Timeline: MD 67 - 1230

Biynah sat with Grace, holding a sketchbook in her hand. "Almost done, Grace," Biynah said as he hand scrawled to and fro. She punctuated her last motion with a dash and tap. "There!"
She turned the pad around to reveal a high-definition reproduction of Grace seated in her chair.
"What do you think?"

"My mum would like it" Grace replied.

Biynah set the sketchbook down with a satisfied smile. "Father says he will teach me how to sculpt one day," she said. "Maybe I could make a sculpture of you... if he ever gets around to teaching me." She began to pout.

Fortunately, Akiva had left a commbadge during his last visit. Biynah took it off the table and tapped it like she learned to do the day before.

=^=Biynah to Fath...Commander ben-Avram=^=

=/\=Go ahead, ahuvah=/\=

=^=Father, I miss you. Can you come up and see the sketch I just made?=^=

The pained sigh was evident through the commlink. =/\=Biynah, I cannot at this moment, but I promise to come as soon as I finish here=/\=

=^=But, Father, Grace needs you=^= Biynah winked at Grace.

Grace said nothing - she just sat quietly in the corner and wondered how long it was going to take for the Vindex to get her parents back and the rest of the people who had been taken hostage.

=/\=Tell Grace that I'm sorry and that Lieutenant Zuzan is on her way. Now I have to go. I'll see you as soon as I can. Ben-Avram out.=/\=

Biynah placed the commbadge on the table much more gently than her petulant sulking would suggest she intended. "Well, at least Amber will play with us."

"If you say so" Grace replied.

Amber made her way to the Observation Lounge with a basket of cakes she had made herself - hoping it would go some way to cheering Grace up. Being reunited with her mother only for Claudia to be taken hostage such a short time afterwards was a lot for Grace to take and Amber planned to be there for her as much as she could. When she arrived in the Observation Lounge she placed the basket of cakes on the table and sat down on the floor next to Grace.

"We're doing our best Grace. We'll get her back - I promise" Amber said.

Grace shook her head. As much as she wanted Claudia and Rebecca to come back Grace didn't think it was going to happen.

"If you say so" Grace responded.

Amber nodded. "I do say so. We'll find them"

"You believe it when you say that," Biynah observed. "Father wants to believe it even though he doesn't. He calls it hope. What do you call your belief, Amber?"

"My belief? It's just trying to remain positive in a situation like this - nearly 400 people have died and we need to stick together now more than ever. When we can find the Captain and everyone else then it will help with morale - even if it's just a little" Amber replied.

Biynah smiled. "Optimism: acting upon the positive value of a variable. Father needs to be more optimistic. I can see why he said you're lovely."

Amber was flattered by the comment but wasn't really sure what context Biynah meant it in - so she guessed.

Amber grinned. "He said I'm lovely did he? He's such a charmer"

"Yes, he did," Biynah replied, "right after I mentioned how pretty you are. Just ask Grace."

Grace wasn't even paying attention - she just sat in the corner looking out of the window and wasn't taking in what was being said between Amber and Biynah. The stars going past were enough for Grace - and she would happily sit and watch them go by for as long as it took.

"I'll check with him on that one...after we've found the Captain and everyone else. Don't think I won't Biynah" Amber joked.

"Thank you for telling me the truth, Amber." Biynah moved to collect her sketchbook. "Would you like to see my drawing of Grace?"

Amber smiled. "Sure - I'd love to see it. I'm sure it's better than anything I could draw - I used to be really bad at art when I was at school. I tried but I guess it was one of those things that wasn't for me"

"Here she is." Biynah beamed proudly as Amber inspected her drawing. "I could draw you, if you like."

"That's lovely Biynah. I haven't got much to do so you can draw me if you like - I'll sit on that chair and try and stay still for you" Amber said.

Amber got up off the floor and sat in the chair she indicated to Biynah before making herself comfortable.

"Wonderful." Biynah grinned mischievously as she rubbed her pencil across her pad. She drew lines, shaded tones, and forced perspective to give false depth. Then she flipped to another page and started over. After but a moment of hurried motion, she flipped to another page, and then another.
"I have not had many models for me to sketch, so thank you."

Amber smiled. "It's alright. I'm sure we'll find you some more soon"

"Almost done." Biynah slowed her hand, taking her time with the final strokes. "And here we are."

When she held up her sketchbook, she flipped through several pages to reveal not one but several sketches of Amber which flowed together in an animated sequence. The animation began with her face in a somber but elegant expression, highlighting her eyes and cheeks. Her animated expression turned jubilant with her eyes closed and chin raised which exposed her strong neck beneath wind-tossed hair. The brief animation ended in the crescendo of her ecstatic smile. It was like looking in a monochromatic mirror.

"What do you think?" Biynah asked.

Amber looked at the portrait and she was extremely impressed.

"I like it Biynah. I think you should consider taking your art skills further - I'm sure the Captain would like a nice portrait of something for her office or quarters when she gets back. Maybe you could draw a portrait of this ship for her?" Amber replied.

"Father!" Biynah gasped, jumping out of her chair and running for the door. Her sketchbook was still in hand.

Akiva had just entered the Observation Lounge, but he braced himself for Biynah's tackle hug. He laughed at her excitement, marveling at the depth of emotional expression she had learned in her short time among them.
"I'm glad to see you're doing fine," he said.

"Yes, we are," Biynah said. "Amber has kept us solid company while Uncle Paul is off preparing lunch." She offered her sketchbook. "See what I drew? It's Amber!"
When she flipped through the pages, Akiva's eyes widened as he silently mouthed 'wow' in a hushed whisper. "That is incredibly beautiful, Biynah."

"She certainly is." Biynah smirked first at Akiva and then at Amber.

"I meant your drawing." Akiva blushed. "But... I mean... all right." He forced himself to make eye contact with Amber. "Thank you, Lieutenant. It seems I owe you another favor."

Amber watched Biynah and Akiva converse whilst keeping an eye on Grace as she kept looking out of the window. Amber felt right now it was probably best to leave her to it.

Amber giggled. "Well - I'm going to call your bluff on this one Commander...what are your plans tonight?"

"I... uh..." Akiva stammered in a failing attempt to find words. The melody of Amber's giggle still rung in his ears. He nearly forgot himself in the sparkle of her eyes.
"I'm really not sure," he finally said. "I'm on indefinite bridge duty tonight until we find the Clyde, which I need to speak to Grace about." He shot the young girl a furtive glance. "Rain check?" He asked Amber with a bite to his lip in blithe, bashful expectation.

" that case I'll ask you another time Commander. I'll be on the bridge if you need me" Amber replied.

With a stifled giggle Amber left the Observation Lounge and went back onto the bridge to resume her tasks. She wasn't sure but she had a feeling Akiva was a bit fond of her - it didn't make Amber feel uncomfortable - but it was evident he was nervous about it.

Akiva heaved a sigh of relief before turning to Grace. "Hey, little one," he said, coming up behind her as she stared out the window. "We found a lead on your mother. I hope we find her tonight."

Grace shrugged. "I hope so. I just want her and Becky back"

"We're doing everything we can. I just thought you'd like to know we're getting closer." Akiva placed a light hand on her shoulder and tried to give an affirmative squeeze.

"Biynah," he said, turning to her. "Thank you for keeping Grace company and being such a reliable young lady. I can't stay much longer, so why don't you show me some more of your drawings?"

Biynah grinned. "Sure. But only if Grace sits with us."

Grace shrugged and got up from her position on the floor and sat next to Biynah. She wasn't sure what she would do without Biynah being around - and of course there was Uncle Paul and also Amber. It was going to be tough but with Biynah there for her Grace felt a little better knowing she would have someone to talk to - when she felt like talking.
