Last Piece Of The Jigsaw

Posted on Sun Mar 26th, 2017 @ 6:24pm by Lieutenant JG Skot Petryr & Captain Claudia Ainscow & Commander Akiva ben-Avram

Mission: S1E5 - Unknown Territory
Location: Captain Ainscow's ready room
Timeline: Mission Day 74; 11:00

It had been a tense few weeks, with the Vindex finally returning and now Skot could finally get to work. He had noticed the lack of a chief--word on the street was the old one was transferred or something. He didn't think anything of it however, when he got the message to report to the CO's ready room.

Claudia stood outside her ready room to speak to Skot again - a mere hour after their initial introduction. She had decided to bring in somebody new but with more experience to lead that department which had seen a lot of change over the past few months since the Vindex entered service. She was stood next to Akiva and about to discuss the plans for the wedding reception - but as Skot had arrived she decided to get the meeting over and done with first.

"Ah Lieutenant - you're here. Please come in - care to join us Commander?" Claudia asked.

"Yes, ma'am." Akiva nodded.

Skot followed the Captain into the ready room, and the fact that she called the XO in as well caused him a little curiosity to rise, "did I do something wrong. sir?"

"You haven't at all Lieutenant. In fact we've brought you back up here to make you an offer - you see we're now lacking a head of department for Operations and we feel based on your previous experience that you would be a more than ideal candidate for this role. If you want to have time to think about it then that's fine - but ideally we want to have someone in place before we leave Deep Space 9 tomorrow afternoon. What do you say Lieutenant?" Claudia asked.

Skot absentmindedly reached up to rub his nose ridges, nodding, "of course! To turn that down would to be disrespectful to the Prophets!"

Claudia beamed - she liked Skot's enthusiasm and was pleased he was so eager to take the role on. She remembered the time it was her being asked to step up to the Chief Operations Officer role and now she was asking Skot to do it on her own ship. With that vacancy now filled Claudia sat herself on the desk behind her - grinning at Akiva before turning back to face Skot.

"There's something that needs to be done first of course. It's a very important assignment and we need it to be done as soon as possible - do you think you can do that for us?" Claudia asked.

"Of course, whatever it is, consider it done!" It was only after the sentence came out of his mouth that Skot realized he agreed to something without knowing what it was.

"Well - we've decided to replace the boring standard bulkhead lighting with some new ones that change colour. Please work with engineering to get that done as soon as you can - I can't wait to see all the colours of the rainbow lighting up this ship's corridors and making it a bit more of a brighter place to be" Claudia said.

"Be sure to preserve the signal lights for yellow and red alerts," Akiva added, ever the pragmatist.

"Yes sir, I'll get it done, in fact I'll go do that now.'

Claudia smiled. "Excellent. For now we'll keep you at your present rank but if things go well then we can look at bringing you up to the same rank level I use for all department heads. Do you have any questions or anything you'd like to ask us?"

"Can I go get to work?" Skot asked, eager to get into his new job.

Claudia nodded and smiled - she was extremely pleased with Skot's eagerness to get started and nodded to the man that she was happy for him to get started with his work. So far the minor staff reshuffle was coming together nicely with Doctor Maddison taking over the Medical department and Lieutenant Petryr taking over the Operations department. There was one other less urgent department change she had in mind but that was a discussion for a later time - for now at least the jigsaw was complete once again.

"Be my guest Lieutenant. If you want to go and speak to Mr Himmel about the change of lighting then you can work out rolling it out in stages. I've already sent the specs to him in advance but I'm not sure if he's had a chance to review our new rainbow lighting scheme" Claudia replied.

"Captain, I suggest reviewing the matter with Security as well," Akiva thought to add. "A rotating color scheme could possibly help thwart enemy intruders who are unprepared for shifting lights."

Claudia nodded. "The six different colours will be programmed to rotate every 10 to 15 seconds so that shouldn't be an issue Commander. It's a good idea though - perhaps we should call a briefing with Ms Cusack and discuss that idea with her as well?"

"That would be prudent," Akiva agreed, then cast a half smile toward Skot. "It would also allow her a proper introduction to our new Ops Chief."

"I'll go get on it, I'll keep you both updated." Skot said, standing up to go get to work.
