Let's Make a Deal

Mission: S1E5 - Unknown Territory
Location: Chief Intelligence Officer's Office
Timeline: MD 77; 11:00

Ryland was playing hookie from the shuttle bay yet again. This time, though, he was after more than just personal pleasure. He had serious concerns at hand that required unorthodox measures and promises to be made.

The fact that the Intel Chief turned out to be a stone-cold fox only sweetened the situation. He could not help but grin, though he reminded himself not to allow for distraction.

"Hello, there, little lady." Ryland tipped an invisible hat as he strode into her office without asking or waiting for permission. "You are just the sight for my sore eyes."

The moment the man entered the Intelligence office without clearance, forcefields came up on all sides of him from the floor to the ceiling and Cat spun around in her chair, a Type II phaser in her hand. She looked at the man in the red uniform with the brown hair and blue eyes, but her phaser didn't waiver. "Who are you and what do you want?" she asked.

"Hot damn." Ryland kept his hands in front. "I was just hoping we could help each other. Think you could lower the shields and your hand cannon so we can talk more friendly-like?"

"I'm going to ask you one more time," Cat said without lowering the phaser. "Who are you and what do you want? If you do not answer, you will find yourself transported to the brig where you may choose to answer to the person in charge of Security and explain why you are there."

"The name's Ryland. Ryland Dedeker." He flashed his brightest grin. "Wish I could say it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, but at the moment you have me at a disadvantage. Maybe we can rectify that. Wanna' hear me out, or are you going to keep your piece trained on me all day?"

Cat lowered the forcefield and the phaser, but kept it in her hand. "Why are you here, Mister Dedeker?" she asked him.

"Because I want to make you a proposition," he said. "And before you get carried away with that phaser again, let me clarify that it's not that kind of proposition." His mouth twisted in a cocksure smirk. "As much as I'd love to mix business with pleasure, I'm here to solicit your help in exchange for my own. Anything after that is entirely up to you." He couldn't resist a wink.

The chair across from the desk was close enough, so he slid into it without missing a beat.

"A quick check into my record will tell you that I've been grounded by pissing off the admiralty, or at least the wrong member of it. Truth be told, they said I was lucky to keep my commission, which is why I'm supposed to be content babysitting shuttlepods out here in the reaches of nowhere instead of at the stick of a starfighter where the action is."

He put his feet up on the desk and folded his hands behind his head.

"Here's where you come in: if you happen to come across any reports or communications that include my name, you give me a heads up so I can do what I got to do. In exchange, I become one of your embedded informants -- for life."

Ryland took the cue from Cat's face and put his feet down only to lean closer. His tone dropped conspiratorially. "As you probably will come to know, I get around. People tell me things, and I overhear what they tell others. I'm also pretty nosey when I have the mind to be. Whaddya' think, Ms Spook? You scratch my back and I scratch yours?"

Cat scowled when he put his feet on her desk and again when he addressed her as Ms. Spook. Still, she listened to what he was asking her and took a minute to think about the request. "The simple fact of the matter, Mister Dedeker, is the fact that I'm in Intelligence and you want me to do intercept communications which is handled by Operations. While I am privy to certain things, it would be a breach of protocol to go outside of that area."

"Your offer is tempting, don't get me wrong, but in light of recent events, I'm afraid that I can't take you up on your offer," she said. "However, if I do happen to see something with your name crosses my desk, I'll give you a heads up if it isn't a breach of security."

Ryland nodded glumly. "I suppose that's as good as I could've hoped for." He made to get up, then hesitated as a thought occurred to him that brought a smile back to his face. "So would the 'no' to business imply a 'yes' to pleasure?"

"No, it wouldn't," Cat said. "My..." She paused to wonder what Nealey was to her since they hadn't made anything official yet. "Friend," she decided. "Wouldn't really approve of such things. Sorry, Dedeker. It looks like today really wasn't your day. Still, if you could keep an ear to the deck and bring me anything unusual, I promise to see what I can do for you on a professional front."

Ryland clicked his tongue and shook his head to one side. "What a shame. But I'd say it sounds as we have a deal." He shot his hand out to shake hers. "I look forward to doing business with you."

She transferred the phaser to her other hand and shook his hand. "You can't win them all, Mister Dedeker," she said. "That's one thing that I've learned. Oh, and next time, press the chime to my office. It's there for a reason."

"I like the sound of that," Ryland said with a wiggle of his brow. "'Next time.'" He stood up and spun on his heels in one motion. On his way to the door, he called out without turning back, "It's a date, Ms Spook."

"The name is Ghatto," Catalina called out as he left. "Catalina Ghatto." She shook her head as she sealed the door again and once more turned to her search.
