Ceiling Sleeper

Mission: S1E1 - Booby Trap
Location: Quarters, USS Vindex
Timeline: Off duty

Nurse Takahashi carried a cylindrical case from the master machinist's shop to her quarters. Out of consideration for the mental health of crew members on long voyages, Sovereigns provided for reasonable living space. Her cabin wasn't spacious as those belonging to ranking officers, but she had plenty with which to be creative.

Otoha had plans, many crafts and projects to undertake. For some of them, a steep hill of paperwork, permission, and space allocation could be circumvented simply by utilizing her own cabin. In preparation for this, she creatively optimized living space in order to make room. The first step was to deal with bedding. She had seen this novelty at academy. A girl from Dekarus colony had triggered a fad, ceiling sleeping.

Mindful that once deployed, ceiling adhesion would be as difficult to move as a powerful magnet, she carefully opened the gravity pad container. Being rolled up, its directional force balanced against itself. Standing directly beneath her selected spot, she switched on a borrowed Engineering technician's antigravity belt and floated upward. Now being held to the ceiling at a net 10% gravity, she placed the rolled-up pad in position and carefully unrolled it. As it flattened out, the ceiling side molecular adhesion stuck fiercely to the ceiling. So strong was it that she couldn't even pull it away with her hands. As the gravity pad quickly unrolled and slapped hard against the ceiling, its exposed gravity-magnet side firmly attracted Otoha.

With the gravity pad now holding her, she no longer needed the antigrav belt and turned it off. She smiled. An unpowered gravity-magnet, it had a beautiful simplicity to it. She made a stiff push against the net lunar gravity level, slowly dropping to the cabin floor. Next was the ornate futon. She pulled it over and lifted it. The higher she held it, the stronger the ceiling pad pulled it. Her bedding fell to the ceiling and held fast. Satisfied with her work, she made a light jump upward and plopped onto the futon. At a net lunar gravity level, there was no need for a thick mattress.

"Hmmm..." It would take some getting used to, seeing things from ceiling perspective. She looked around her immediate area. Night table... drink holder... future embellishments were in order.
