Mission: S1E1 - Booby Trap
Location: Captain's Ready Room - USS Vindex
Timeline: Mission Day 2; 11:00

Lieutenant JG Kazyah Linn stepped to the door of the Captain's Ready Room, pressing his finger to the chime that would announce his presence. He had to admit, he was slightly nervous about this assignment, though he would never tell anyone. This was his first assignment since leaving Starfleet Intelligence and yet he felt more comfortable in the shadows than on a fancy starship. But this was his choice and he had to stick by it.

Claudia heard the chime echo around her office and looked up from the PADD that she was looking at. She put it down and stood up before calling whoever her unexpected visitor was to enter her office.

"Enter" Claudia called.

The doors opened with a swish and a man, clad in a grey collared uniform, stepped through. Lieutenant Kazyah Linn, reporting for duty ma'am." he said, standing with his legs apart and his hands clasped behind his back.

Claudia watched as Lieutenant Linn entered her office and stood in front of her. She was grateful that she had been assigned an Intelligence Officer as in this area of space they would need every piece of intelligence they could get. It was a position she had not seen used before on the Trident or the Endurance so Claudia was looking forward to seeing an Intelligence in action aboard the Vindex.

"Welcome Lieutenant. Take a seat if you like" Claudia replied.

With a nod, Kaz took a seat, not saying a word.

"How are you finding your assignment so far? I've never worked with an Intelligence Officer before so I'm looking forward to seeing your department in action Mr Linn. I take it you are aware of our mission and The Consortium?" Claudia asked.

"I am," was Kaz's simple answer. "And the assignment has been...uneventful as of yet. Any assessment I could give would be misleading."

Claudia guessed that as he hadn't been aboard very long it was to be expected. From what she could gather he only arrived on the ship very late yesterday evening - and she wasn't overly surprised by Kaz's response.

"That's good to know. Our Mission Advisor will be conducting a briefing for the senior later on today but as you're already well-versed if you'd prefer to get on with your duties then that's fine with me. Can I get you anything to drink at all?" Claudia replied.

"I will have what you are having," Kaz stated. While he wasn't particularly thirsty, he felt that taking a beverage could help put the Captain at ease.

Claudia decided to have a cup of tea - so she replicated two cups of tea and placed them down on the table in front of their intended recipients before taking a sip of hers.

"What do you think of the situation out here at the moment?" Claudia asked.

"It's dire, that's for sure," Kaz stated, picking up the cup of tea. "I don't think I have too many personal feelings on the situation though."

Claudia nodded in agreement. She knew somebody that did have personal feelings about the situation but they weren't feelings that Claudia shared. Now she was a Commanding Officer she had to put any personal feelings about assignments aside and focus on her role and her crew.

"I guess that's a good thing" Claudia replied.

"I understand that we have a Mission Advisor aboard," Kaz stated, taking a drink of the tea. "I will need access to him."

Claudia nodded. "We do indeed. Lieutenant Tolan has been assigned to the vessel for the duration of this mission. He isn't aboard at the moment but he expects to be back on board within the next hour or so before we launch. When he returns and he has conducted the briefing I will arrange for you to meet with him"

"I will also need weekly scheduled meetings with yourself," Kaz stated as follow up. "This will be a chance for me to inform you of what is going on in the rest of the Task Force as well as any information that may be pertinent for you to know."

Claudia was pleased that Kaz was keen to keep her in the know of what was going on in the area. She always liked and appreciated being kept informed of any developments.

"Of course - I appreciate you wanting to keep me informed. How does every Monday at the start of Alpha shift sound?" Claudia responded.

"That will do perfectly," Kaz said, typing the information into a PADD, but not looking down at it.

Claudia admired how Kazyah went about his everyday duties despite the fact he was completely blind. After watching him type the information on his PADD without even looking down at it she continued.

"That's good to hear. If you'd prefer I'll let you talk to Tolan about whether you want to include him in the weekly meetings between us or whether you want to have a separate weekly meeting with him" Claudia replied.

"Those meetings will need to be separate," Kaz stated without taking a moment to think. "While he is somewhat knowledgable on the current situation in the Quadrant, he doesn't have nearly as high of clearance as you and I do. He can't be privy to some of the information I may need to share with you."

Claudia nodded before responding.

"That's fine - I'll let you arrange a suitable meeting between yourself and Tolan. I don't know much about him but I'm sure you'll work well together" Claudia replied.

"Of course," Kaz stated. "Do you have any questions for me?"

Claudia couldn't think of anything to ask him at the moment.

"Not at the moment Lieutenant. If I think of anything I'll let you know" Claudia replied.

Kaz nodded. "Also, my superior at Starfleet Intelligence said to give you his regards."

"Thank you Lieutenant. When you speak to him next please return the favour. Once you've finished your drink you can resume your duties and I'll inform you when Tolan returns to the ship. I appreciate you coming to stop by and checking in with me" Claudia replied.

Kaz stood, placing the cup down on the desk. "Of course. Thank you, ma'am." he said before he turned and walked out of her office.

Claudia watched as Kazyah left her office and after finishing her cup of tea the Vindex's Commanding Officer resumed what she was doing before his brief visit. She was looking forward to working with him.
