Purring Pillow

Posted on Sun Jun 26th, 2016 @ 8:34pm by Ensign Otoha Takahashi RN

Mission: S1E1 - Booby Trap
Location: Cabin, USS Vindex

In what little time she had off duty, Otoha spent time nesting in her cabin. In particular, she redecorated roof space around her ceiling futon. When it came her time to turn in for the night, she hopped up from the floor and fell into the mild ceiling gravity. She couldn't sleep, though. All she could do was lay there and stare down at the floor.

Mai appeared beside her, "This is the second night that you've shorted yourself on proper sleep."

"Hey. I'm supposed to be the nurse, here."

"Yes, you are." She offered a self-satisfied smile as Otoha turned her head to squint at her.

The nurse tried breath relaxation, but it didn't work. "Maybe I should sleep from the floor space like everybody else."

"That isn't the problem."

"Oh? Then what's the problem, Miss Freud?"

"Worry. You've been tense ever since the briefing about the Consortium."

Otoha nodded, "I have been. Vindex is a powerful starship, but we lack telepathic defences. It is like a fortress with no roof on it."

Mai shrugged, "You want to go back and hunt for Andorian mind crystals?" She received a sullen stare in response. "I'm not belittling your worry, maiden. I just don't want paranoia to displace healthy caution. You're taking reasonable steps."

She sighed, "In a way, I wish we lived back in the Kirk era. Everybody knew exactly who enemies were and who friends were."

Her ethereal companion grinned lightly, "Did they?"

Otoha rolled over on her side away from her, "Not the time for mind games, my pest."

"No, it isn't."

Whether a manifestation of uncontrolled multiple personality disorder or alien symbiont, a large white tiger with red stripes appeared on the floor. It cocked its head at the odd sight of two women lying on the ceiling. Mai chuckled, "Oh, come on, Ouka. Jump up." The big cat obliged, landing atop them.

Otoha laughed, "Don't make me roll too far off the pad! I'll fall to the floor!" Making itself at home, the tiger stretched itself out between them. She protested, "Hey! I'm the real physical body, here, not you!" She sighed looking over the animal, "Mai... Why? Exactly how is this is going to help me sleep?"

Her companion of the mind didn't respond. Instead, Ouka settled into the low, infrasonic purring of a tiger.

Otoha smiled, leaning back against the comfortable creature. "Okay, you got me." She closed her eyes and let the mesmerizing rumble lull her into sleep. Upon reaching the unconscious dreamscape of covered gardens, Mai grabbed her hand for a happy run, "Finally!"
