Run In

Mission: S2E1 - Secrets
Location: Ship's corridors
Timeline: MD 100 0630

It had been a good few days for Ahira, he'd been able to sleep and his sleep hadn't been interrupted by nightmares. His counseling sessions had helped and he'd been meditating more, which had also helped.

It was ninety minutes until his shift started and after a quick shave, he decided to go for a run. He pulled on black gym shorts, a silver and black Parrises Square tee shirt and a pair of cross trainers

After stretching a few minutes he exited his cabin. His gait was smooth and practiced as he slowly increased his pace. Turbolift doors opened and he had to dodge a man emerging from it, barely avoiding hitting him in the process.

"Damn, I'm sorry about that," he said.

Finn, who was still half asleep at the moment of near impact, suddenly found himself awake. He too was dressed in active wear, his signature Azure blue coloured shorts, a black tank and colour matched shoes made sure he was looking his best. "No worries, it woke me up. I'm still half asleep," he joked, "Just means I won't drop a weight on myself when I hit the gym."

Ahira found himself smiling, partially in relief, and partially because he realized that the man he had almost run into was good looking. Forcing himself to keep his eyes on his fellow officer's face, he said, "Going to the gym, huh? I was just on a run."

He ran his hand through his hair, which had fallen down onto his forehead. "You must be new here. I'm Ahira Kasamoto."

"Yeah, a quick morning workout before starting my shift," Finn smiled warmly, "I'm new-ish. Been keeping my head down, trying to learn all I can about the ship. I'm Finn Fulton, Engineering Department." He too noticed his would be assailant was rather handsome as he extended a hand.

The hybrid officer took the offered hand and shook it. "Well, there's plenty of time before we have to start work, I'm a spook by the way, and I'll spare you the ancient joke about not telling anyone or my having to kill you. "

"Anyway, after we finish our workouts I could buy your breakfast, it's the least I can do."

"Oh you don't have to," Finn blushed very subtly, "although," he paused for a second, "don't we just get them out the replicator? No one said anything about currency." As smart as he could be, Finn was often easily confused around attractive guys.

Ahira shrugged his shoulders, if he noticed the blush, he didn't say anything. "I guess you caught me there," he admitted, "I was just thinking it would be nice to spend some time with a fellow crew mate." He paused slightly before venturing, "especially a good looking crew mate."

"Well then I am certainly up for that too," Finn gave a very mischevious yet playful smirk. "I should only be a half hour in the gym today. So meet you in about 40 minutes or so by the time I get a shower and changed? Where is good? I'll admit, I've not ventured much past my quarters and Engineering yet."

"Well, the replicator in my cabin works just fine, and I even have some cookies that I made, that don't come from a replicator."

"I shall see you shortly then," Finn grinned, "Cookies are a weakness of mine." He had a feeling his short gym session may be even shorter today.

"I'll be waiting for you," Ahira replied, "they're oatmeal raisin, I hope that's okay. I ate the chocolate chips ones."

"Oatmeal is breakfast-ish, I can justify that," Finn replied as he began to move off, "I will see you in a bit then."

Ahira nodded, sidestepped the other man still grinning and started running again.

40 Minutes Later

Having finished up his routine a little quicker allowed Finn extra time to shower and make himself look presentable. It wouldn't take him long to arrive at Ahira's door with a small basket of muffins in his hands, different kinds, blueberry, chocolate, honey, lemon crumb to name a few. If his dads taught him anything, was never go to someone's place for the first time empty handed. He pressed the chime and waited for a response.

Ahira had finished his run as well, showered and changed into his uniform. Even though he normally kept his place neat and tidy, he took a few minutes to dust. The decor was definitely standard issue, with no personal or family pictures. The only thing out of the ordinary was an aquarium with several species of exotic fish swimming in the clear salt water.

Rather than simply calling out when he heard the chime, he went to the door and opened it manually. As the doors hissed open he said, "Right on time, come in."

"Thanks," Finn said as he extended the small basket of muffins and began to scan the room. His eyes were instantly drawn to the aquarium that seemed to brighten and lighten up the room. "Wow," dropped from his mouth before he could catch it.

Ahira had taken the offering with a nod of thanks and was walking back to the kitchenette when he saw Finn's response out of the corner of his eye. He sat the basket down on the counter.

Standing behind his guest, but not so close he invaded the other man's personal space he said, "I know this may seem silly, but I could, I have just sat here and watched them for more than an hour. I've even used it as a focus for my meditations."

"I can see why. I would get lost in them all day," Finn answered, still mesmerized by what he was looking at. "What types do you have?" He was doing the best he could to draw his focus away from the tank, it was almost hypnotic.

Ahira moved alongside the other man still maintaining some distance between the two.

He pointed to a pair of fish about two inches big with black and white stripes. "Those are black and white butterflies, they resemble butterflies hence the name." Then he pointed to another pair of similarly shaped fish that were predominately a bright goldish green with black and white tails. "Those are Yellow Longnose Butterflies.

He pointed a Blue Spotted Jawfish, a Royal Gamma Basslet, and brilliantly blue Andorian Ice Puffer, a rainbow colored Betazid Drumfish and then pointed to a small orange and white striped fish with what looked like spikes growing out of its body. That's a lionfish. not one you want to hold in your hand, but pretty to look at."

"They all are," Finn commented with wonder, looking at each intricate and detailed fish. "I've yet to do anything to my quarters. I still have a lot of my things stowed in a bag at the bottom of a closet," he chuckled lightly. "How long have you been on board then?"

"About a month," Ahira replied, "I've learned to travel light. I don't have a lot of possessions, don't really need them, this aquarium is really the only thing of value that I own. And it's the only thing I've done to my place."

"I don't know about you, but I'm hungry. We could bring the food over here if you don't mind sitting on the floor."

"I'm here literally days," Finn said, "I'm good to sit wherever. Where would you prefer? It is your quarters after all."

"The floor it is then, Finn." Ahira replied moving to the kitchen, "If you want to grab the food it's on the counter, yours and mine, I'll grab some drinks. Do you want coffee, or something else?"

"I'm not much of a coffee drinker," Finn admitted, "I'm more of a herbal tea guy." He picked up a small selection of food, plus a muffin he had been eyeballing since he replicated it and went back to the floor. All the while, trying not to wrinkle his uniform.

"Really?" Ahira asked furrowing his brow, "I'm more of a tea guy myself. Have you ever had butter tea? I think you might like it, would you like to try some?"

"Some time, when shift isn't next," Finn replied, "I can be quite sensitive to new things. Normally I have a cup of peppermint tea each morning. It really sets me up for the day."

"Well then," Ahira replied, "peppermint tea it is." He went to the replicator and got two identical cups then walked with the other man back to his living room and sat down beside him.

As he handed the engineer the glass he said,"So, I know this is probably a question you get a lot, but why engineering?"

Finn smiled, it was a question he did get a lot, "I like to fix things. Figure out how they work, make them better, put them back together. I couldn't be on a starship without knowing how every piece of it worked and how that worked with other systems. What about you and Intelligence then?"

Ahira blew into the cup before taking a sip of the tea. His expression turning deadpan, "Well, I have a rather, uh, checkered past it was one of those Starfleet or a penal colony options. I may not be the brightest guy around, but it was a pretty easy choice."

"Oh," Finn replied, feeling slightly awkward for having asked the question. "I guess it is a pretty interesting department, from what I guess, or what you could tell, or not," he joked.

"It is pretty interesting," Ahira agreed with a smile, the Chief and I have similar histories. So, what are some of your interests outside of Engineering?"

"I play the guitar," he began, "things just to chill really, bars, the gym." He smiled, "Kind of boring really, you?"

"Well, I like to cook, especially baking. I like to play poker when I can find a game, I read a lot, and of course the fish there. Oh, and I play the piano, maybe we can start a band."

"What kind of music do you play? I'm more country/folk style. I find it nice and relaxing and I get to sing along as well. It suits my voice the best, well, at least in my head it does."

"Similar styles," the hybrid man replied, ballads mostly, but I play some jazz too."

"Oh nice," Finn replied, suddenly dawning on him that time would be getting on. "Breakfast has been great thanks," he finished off his last, "but, I am pretty sure I am due in Engineering soon."

"Yeah, and I need to report in too. You want to meet again sometime?"

"Love to," Finn said as he went to get up and return all his dishes and things.

Ahira stood as well brushing a few crumbs off of his lap, then into a trash receptacle. "Good, I have some holodeck time reserved for the day after tomorrow. Nothing too demanding, I have a nice relaxing beach simulation. Swimming, snorkeling, surfing, whatever you like. But, we could do some other program if you like, or it doesn't even have to be something from the holodeck."

"Sounds great," Finn smiled, "send me a message with the time it is booked and if I'm not working, I'm there."

"Okay, I'll do it. See you then."
