Shocking News

Mission: S2E1 - Secrets
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: MD 100 1121 hours

Laena's fingers drummed against her leg as she sat on the biobed. She'd been left alone for the past few minutes while the nurse went to get the physician that was on duty. She hadn't felt good for a few days now, and it was beginning to be concerning.

"Petty Officer Laena?" A gravelly voice asked from behind her. Arkady stood there, a clutch of padd's in his hands which he set down on the foot of the biobed. "I am sorry to say that I do not know everyone yet, so if I am wrong in naming please forgive."

A meek smile graced the young woman's face as she nodded, "Yes, that's me, Doctor."

"AH! Is for the the good," Arkady pulled up a stool beside the biobed and picked up one of the padd's, reading off the chart notations scratched there by one of the nurses. "So you have....huum? I was about to say that you have complaint about being green around the gills, but that would be culturally offensive and anatomically inaccurate. Could you, in as much detail as you can, tell me what has brought you here?"

Laena giggled, despite the horrible way she felt. "I'm just not feeling very well. I've had bits of nausea lately and have been throwing up every day. And I'm..." her voice lowered a bit, no doubt from embarrassment, "and my breasts have been very tender to the touch."

“No need to feel embarrassment. I broach several uncomfortable situations every day, sometimes whilst in sickbay,” Arkady said jovially. “But, to keep my mind clear of other worries whilst some of your lab work is being done, perhaps you could tell me a little about yourself? I am wanting to know crew better, seems good time whilst we wait for mass spectrometer to get off coffee break.”

"What would you like to know?" Laena asked.

"Oh, the small things. Where did you grow up, why did you join Starfleet, is there someone in your life? I ask only because I have orderly who makes the eyes of puppies at women, and I am looking to find a way to keep him from doing it more often," Arkady said with a smile. Though he mentally put down a note to have the orderly scanned for genetic similarities to a certain shuttle bay manager...

Laena shifted on the biobed looking slightly uncomfortable. "There is someone in my life," she said, obviously ignoring the other questions the man asked. While he seemed very nice, she just wasn't in the mood to discuss a past she would rather not remember.

"Ah, to be young and foolishly entangled. I wish much happiness and fewer broken bones than my own," Arkady commented with a smile. From the behind the biobed a nurse coughed lightly and extended a padd to Arkady. "Ah, your results."

In truth, the results had come in from the first scan, but sometimes a doctors greatest tool was an ability to play for time. But like all good things, it must come to an end.

"Okay, Laena. I want you to know something, that whatever comes next for you is your choice. And whatever you choose, you will find friend here in sickbay for you," Arkady looked at her and tried to gauge the right amount of a smile for her. "You are pregnant. Is beginning, but as of now, the signs are appearing. Your lab results confirm it."

Laena's eyes went wide with a mix of fear and shock as the green pigment drained from her face. "I-I-I-" She stopped herself, realising she wasn't going to be able to speak and took a desperate breath. "What?" she said, finally able to get something out.

"The morning based nausea, the sensitivity of your lactiferous ducts as they begin process of preparation. Is normal, expected in these situations," Arkady tapped a finger against the side of the padd. "Preliminary scans show the typical blood based tells for pregnancy as well. A more detailed T-ray imaging will give us more firm details of what we are entering into."

Arkady then flipped the padd onto its side.

"On other hand, we are in stage of events where should you desire things can be...halted, stopped or otherwise brought to a cessation of events. As I said, you have options. Options that are available to you at all times," Arkady said even handily.

"No, I just..." Laena's eyes could not stay still, as they bounced from object to object. Her mind raced with so many things, unable to formulate a coherant sentence. She suddenly looked up at the Doctor, her eyes begging for something she couldn't quite put into words.

"Ah. I see. This is quite normal you know? My wife was the same way when she found out we were expecting, so I know slightly more than nothing about how you are feeling," he chuckled. "Would you like me to contact someone for you? I could have Petty Officer Mallady get them for you?"

In silence the woman just nodded.

"Could I have take a name? Would be hard work to have Mallady round up everyone and parade them through here until someone demanded to know what was wrong with you," he smiled, leaning his head to one side to find that Mallady was indeed ready to run.

For big female cricket from the planet of friendly nightmare, she was a shockingly good runner. He'd seen her medals from the 2379 Olympics.

"The C-Captain, please," Laena said, her breaths becoming short and desperate.

"Okay," he turned to Mallady who had already left to quietly call the captain down to sickbay. "Laena? I know it feels bigger than it should, this news, this moment...but is only moment. And I will be here for all your moments until you say otherwise."

The woman just nodded, her fingers playing with the hem of her shirt.

"Okay," Arkady said, standing with a thunderous single clap of his hands. "I think perhaps you would prefer to have meeting with ships captain in less public place yes? I know perfect place, is my office. Good sound proofing, and replicator for little things. Also has chair, former CMO (pronounced see-mo) had it shipped here at great expense from Ferenganar. Many massage settings. More than I think is healthy. For you, I think is earned."

Laena slipped off the biobed as the man held out his hand to help her down. "Thank you," she said as he lead her to the room he promised.
