Mission: S2E1 - Secrets
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: MD 100; 1135 hours

Laena lay on the biobed in the private room that Doctor Sjet moved her to while she waited. Her legs were pulled up to her chest as she silently tried to take deep breaths to stay calm. That's what was most important right now, she had to stay calm.

Claudia had been summoned to sickbay as a matter of urgency to speak to someone she held dear. After asking for directions to where she was being kept Claudia made her way over to Laena's private room and gently knocked on the door.

"'s Claudia" Claudia said softly.

"Come in," Laena said quietly, sitting up on the biobed.

Claudia opened the door and closed it behind her. Walking over to the biobed she sat down next to Laena and wrapped an arm around her shoulder. She was very fond of the Science Officer and didn't like to see her upset.

"What's the matter sweetheart? Has someone upset you?" Claudia asked.

Laena shook her head, leaning on Claudia's shoulder. "I'm pregnant," she said just before bursting out in tears.

Claudia wasn't sure whether to congratulate Laena or not - after all - she didn't know if the pregnancy was planned or not. For now she continued to embrace Laena tightly to reassure her. She knew how fragile the young woman was and this would undoubtedly be a big thing for her to accept.

"Do you know what you want to do about the baby?" Claudia replied.

"What do you mean?" she asked, after taking a few deep breaths to calm back down.

Claudia paused to think about what to say and how to say it. This was a very delicate situation and it needed to be handled with care. Normally she would be congratulating her but this was different. She knew about Laena's past and this could potentially be very difficult for her.

Claudia spoke. "I know it's a bit early to be thinking about it but...have you thought about being a mother before you found out about your pregnancy? When I was your age I hadn't thought about it at all - but having Grace and holding her in my arms a few years later was the most amazing feeling ever...and now...yeah"

Laena shook her head, "I've never even considered it," she said, her fingers playing with the hem of her shirt. "I don't even know what Akiva is going to say."

Claudia could tell how confused and scared Laena was feeling at that very moment. When she became pregnant with Grace she wasn't sure how to react - but Laena's circumstances were much different to her own and she would need all the support she could get.

"Akiva? I had no idea you two were involved...but it goes without saying that I'm here to support you no matter what. If you want me to be there when you tell him then all you have to do is ask and I'll drop whatever I'm doing. I'm in the same boat as you right now so I want to help you however I can - no matter what you decide" Claudia replied.

"You're pregnant?" Laena asked, her eyes drifting down to Claudia's stomach.

Claudia nodded. "I am. Becky and I decided to have one together before we got married. It's still early days which is why I haven't told anyone other than Martha - so you're about the second person other than my doctor to know"

Laena gave a weak smile, "I feel honored to know."

Claudia smiled back. "You're special to me Laena - that's why I want to share things like that with you and also be there for you when you need someone to talk to who isn't your partner. I consider you one of my best friends and I'm happy you've found someone that loves you and makes you feel happy."

"I'm not ready for this," Laena said, her eyes turning down towards her legs, which were still pulled up onto the biobed.

"I know you're scared Laena but you need to speak to Akiva about this too. When I first found out I was pregnant I was exactly the same...even though it was kind of planned I didn't expect it to happen so soon. For what it's worth though I think you'll be an amazing mother" Claudia replied.

"How do you know that?"

Claudia smiled. "I know that because I know you Laena. I know that you're a kind and caring soul who would make the most amazing mother to that new life which is growing inside of you. I think you and Akiva make a nice couple too and I'm happy for you both"

Laena took a deep breath and nodded. "Thanks," she said, slowly sitting upright. "I just don't know if I'm ready to tell him yet," she said, wiping her cheeks and the corners of her eyes now that she had stopped crying.

"You don't have to tell him right away because I appreciate how much of a shock to the system this is for you. I know dating and you know...isn't very easy for you so I think you're being very brave about it. Do it when you're ready - and if you want me there just call me. It's not like I'll be rushing around now is it?" Claudia responded.

Feeling a bit emotional herself Claudia took a moment or two to compose herself before continuing. She felt honoured that Laena had asked for her instead of her own partner or Counsellor Maera - it made her feel even though they had a difficult start in their friendship they were good friends no matter what.

Claudia asked. "Is there anything I can get for you while I'm here?"

Laena swallowed, shaking her head. "No, I think I'll be ok. But you're right, I need to talk to Akiva."

Claudia nodded. "Alright. Do you want me to be there with you?"

"Do I want you to? Yes. Do I need you to? No." Laena took a deep breath, slowly letting it out. "This is something I have to do on my own."

Taking Laena's hand and squeezing it gently she smiled.

"That's fine. I'll at least walk you up to wherever he is - but if you change your mind you know where I am. I'm so proud of you - promise me you will never forget that" Claudia replied.

Laena slid off the bed, "Thank you, Captain," she said before she turned and left the room.
