Could There Be Another Way?

Posted on Mon Jul 11th, 2016 @ 7:28pm by Lieutenant Kazyah Linn & Ensign Otoha Takahashi RN

Mission: S1E1 - Booby Trap
Location: Intel Ops, USS Vindex

Otoha read the briefings, several times. This was just one of those haunting moments that people look back upon years in the future. 'If only' is a question that can only be decided upon at a moment like this. Burdened by worries, she slowly made her way through the corridors with a troubled brow. She opened up her wristbook, "Computer, what is Lt. Linn's current status?"

"Lieutenant Linn is currently available," the Computer said in her usual unfeeling voice.

She asked, "Location?" Noting the diagram, she closed up the device. Picking up her pace, she made her way to Lt. Linn's regular duty haunt and entered. "Lieutenant? Are you busy?"

Kazyah looked up at the woman who had entered his office, slightly annoyed that she appeared to have entered without announcing herself first. But this early in a posting, he had to give a little flexibility. He placed down the PADD he was reading and motioned towards the chairs in front of his desk. "I can make some time. Please have a seat."

"Thank you." It took a few moments after she took a seat in formal poise to find the words. "Sir, I've been trying to understand the Consortium that we will be up against." Her eyes stared off, "So many times, adversaries become so embittered that they give up all thought of reconciliation." She regained presence of mind, "I realize that I don't and probably won't ever know the full political dynamics, but... I still must ask. What is it that the Consortium wants? Sometimes, enemies become less hostile if they see hope for achieving their desires."

"I would prefer you introduce yourself first," Kazyah stated, taking the time to write down the woman's questions on a PADD for easy recall.

The diminutive woman was a bit puzzled by the request. "Computer, biometric ident on myself."

==Ensign Otoha Takahashi... Species, human... Currently assigned and active, USS Vindex... Department, Medical... Role, RN... Superior, Dr. Noah Fields... Security level, Standard.==

Kaz raised an eyebrow, "Was there a need to do that? Could you not have just told me your name instead?"

"I was surprised that Computer didn't announce a newcomer, Sir. I wanted to make sure that it at least was running in response mode. I meant no disrespect."

Kaz sighed. This woman did not seem to know how to handle herself in social situations, but perhaps now was not the time to point that out. "And you would like to know more about the Consortium? May I ask for what purpose?"

Otoha stared off, "I don't want to see the day where the few stand over many graves. I don't want to hear them say the words far too late, 'If only there could have been another way.'" She shook her head, resuming eye contact. Her tone was quiet, "No more Pyrrhic victories. That's not good enough."

"You do realize that, as a nurse, you have no bearing on the outcome of this mission, correct?" Kaz stated. "If there is another way to handle things, that would be my job, and the Captain's job to determine. Not yours." He realized after he said it that it sounded a bit more harsh than he intended, but it was too late now. The woman had to realize her place.

His words chilled her to the core. Otoha stared off for a few moments, then spoke little above a whisper, "Those are words that carve a destiny, Lieutenant." She sighed, refocusing presence of mind, "I apologize for having bothered you."

"Have a good day, Ensign," Kaz said, pressing a button on this desk that brought up his computer monitor and began to work.
