The New Command Team

Posted on Mon Oct 30th, 2017 @ 1:28am by Captain Emily Jones & Lieutenant Commander Arturo M'Rohass

Mission: S2E2 - Vindeux
Location: Captain Jones' Ready Room
Timeline: Mission Day 127; 16:30

Emily returned to her ready room after her trip to Main Engineering to introduce herself to Finn. On her to-do list was to choose a First Officer and after reading up on the remaining command staff on board Emily had made her choice. Even though Emily was yet to officially take command of the ship Claudia had already cleared her belongings out of the ready room - this giving Emily somewhere to base herself from.

=/\="Captain Jones to Lieutenant M'Rohass. If you're free could you come to the ready room please?"=/\= Emily asked.

A moment later, the door chime sounded. Arturo waited for a response.

Emily heard the chime sound. She looked up and gave her guest permission to enter the room.

"Come in" Emily called.

"Reporting as ordered, Captain," Arturo said once he was standing in front of Emily's desk. "What can I do for you?"

Emily smiled. "Please sit down Lieutenant - I have a few things I'd like to discuss with you now you're my second in command. Before we get started can I get you anything?"

"No, thank you, Captain," Arturo said, taking a seat in one of the chairs in front of Emily's desk. "My day is almost done and I am looking forward to a little exercise, a shower, and then some dinner and alone time with she who owns my heart."

Emily smiled. "You're lucky Lieutenant. My husband is on New Bajor running his business so I don't get to see him all that much. Anyway as you're now the Executive Officer of this vessel there's something I'd like to present to you"

Emily opened the draw of her desk and handed a hollow pip across the table to the Caitian man.

"I hereby promote you to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Congratulations...Commander" Emily concluded.

Arturo said nothing for a moment. He knew he has supporters, but he also knew there were those who thought his guilty verdict should have never been overturned and that he should still be out there somewhere in the black, living hand to mouth as a privateer. It was even money whether he would ever see a promotion again. He certainly didn't expect one so soon.

"Thank..." Arturo said. "Ahem. Thank you, Captain. I hope I can live up to your expectations of me. May I?"

He reached out and picked up the small box he now noticed sitting on the captain's desk. He opened it carefully, took out the hollow pip and added it to the two solid pips on his collar.

"Lieutenant Commander Arturo M'Rohass," he said, a unique combination of pride and humility taking over his voice and posture. "I think I like the sound of that. I think I like the sound of that very much. I will not let you down, Captain. I, Lieutenant Commander Arturo M'Rohass, do so swear!"

Emily smiled. "I have a feeling you and I are going to get along great. If you wish to continue on the helm for the time being you'd be more than welcome to. I'm also looking at candidates for Second Officer...I'm thinking of Lieutenant Whistler at this stage. Do you have any suggestions yourself? You've been here longer than me so you'll know the crew better than I do at the moment"

"Actually," Arturo said. "If we could find a replacement Chief Flight Control Officer at some point in the near future, I'd appreciate it. The position of Executive Officer will keep me busy enough by itself. While in theory you could keep me on the books as CFCO, in reality other officers would be at the helm most if not all of the time. As for Mister Whistler..."

Arturo frowned.

"He's a bit violent for a Starfleet officer," Arturo said. "He seems quick to use force, especially deadly force, without first trying less lethal methods, including talking. That kind of nonsense won't fly with me I can assure you of that. I, more than anyone, understand that violence is sometimes required. I didn't survive those years as a privateer without knowing when to use soft power and when to use hard power. But we're Starfleet and we have certain standards. That said...we are somewhat short on senior officers at the moment and he is an experienced officer. So, provisionally, I'd agree that Mister Whistler has the potential to make a good Second Officer."

Emily nodded and made a note on her console to look for a new head of Flight Control as soon as possible.

"I'll look into a replacement for Flight Control as soon as possible to ease your workload as I appreciate the role of first officer is quite taxing at the best of times. As for Mr Whistler I have certain concerns myself but I feel he deserves a chance to prove himself in the role on a trial period as you have said. With that all out of the way...is there anything you'd like to ask me at all?" Emily responded.

"Yes," Arturo said. "Where did the information about the conduit come from? Rumors abound, but I will not act on rumors. If you expect me to be useful to you, I need to know what's going on."

Emily shrugged. "An informant who is now in our brig. If you like we can go and speak to him ourselves once we get underway - that way we can check whether his story matches up with the one Captain Ainscow and Commodore Hutchinson told me. That way we'll have a good idea whether he's telling the truth or not"

"That might be useful," Arturo said. "I don't think anyone who was in on that conversation is still serving aboard the Vindex."

Emily shook her head to confirm this was the case.

"That's correct. If you wait a second I will get you a copy of Captain Ainscow's report so you can read and familiarise yourself with it before we speak to the informant" Emily replied.

Emily downloaded a copy of Claudia's report onto a spare PADD before sliding it over the table to Arturo.

Emily concluded. "There you go. I'd like to propose we speak to the informant tomorrow morning at around 10:00 hours - that should give us plenty of time to read this report. Is that time suitable for you?"

"Absolutely," Arturo replied. "I'll read this tonight and be ready to meet with our informant at ten hundred hours tomorrow! If there is nothing else, I should probably get back to work."

Emily smiled. "Excellent Commander. Please assume command on the bridge for the time being...I have a lot of paperwork to do so I should probably get on with it"

Standing up and moving around the table she extended a hand to Arturo.

"I look forward to working with you Commander. If you need anything you know where I am," Emily concluded.

"Thank you, Captain," Arturo replied. He rose and left the Captain's Ready Room. Even if they stayed on this side of the conduit, just the opportunity to study such a conduit would advance Federation science. And if somehow they ended up traveling through the conduit to another universe...what and adventure!
