Mission: S1E1 - Booby Trap
Location: Cabin, USS Vindex
Timeline: Before bedtime

Otoha Takahashi pressed the console casing closed on her space cycle. It snapped snugly into place and the instruments reported a good diagnostic status. For a time, all she did was sit there and stare at it.

Mai settled down beside her, "Hey! You did it! You finished!"

The nurse sighed, still staring off, "Somehow, it no longer seems important to me."

"What? After all the hard work you put in?" Mai leaned down on her side, propping her head up on her elbow and hand. "You're still depressed about the Consortium situation."

Otoha nodded subtly. "Blind procedures, little ants marching off doing their little tiny duties."

"The little tiny ant feels helpless to avert another grim outcome?"

"It's not a sense of helplessness. It's the futility that comes with giving up. It's not my job. Be a good little minion."

"You volunteered to be a Starfleet minion. In fact, you bargained for it. They put you through medical academy, and now you get to pay up with a few years of intake physicals."

Otoha almost didn't hear her. "I was very young, but I remember. After the millions died during the Dominion War, the big leaders all had long faces." She mimicked, "How could this have happened?" She shook her head and met eye contact with Mai, "It happened because nobody heeded the warnings. And now, history is repeating itself. We've learned nothing."

Mai rested comfortably with a searching, slightly predatory stare, "So, you're just going to give up? Close your mind, do your duty, don't ask questions?"

She sighed, "What can I do?"

Mai shrugged, "You made a contribution, the hecko check to alert when the mind becomes dominated. That's a start." She watched her bewildered host shake her head. "But it's only a start."

Otoha awakened out of her slump and looked sharply over at her, "What do you mean?"

A grin slowly creased her lips, "Think, maiden."

Again, the nurse shook her head, "Detect abnormal brain activity... what else is there?"

Mai's tone was tranquil, "In the victim."

Otoha shrugged, "Naturally, what-" Her eyes widened with realization as her friend began chuckling. "You mean... detect brain patterns in telepathic attackers?"

Mai laid back, holding her head up with clasped hands, "One mind cannot attack another without some active, detectable force being involved. The trick is having instrumentation that can pick it up." She sighed, "But you're still missing it."

Encouraged and animated, Otoha adjusted her seating on the floor to face her closely, "Give me another clue."

"Attacks happening... Attacks......... before they happen."

The nurse's eyes widened again, "Teeps can lay low by minimizing active activity, but..." Tears filled her eyes in realization, "Subconscious activity is just that, not consciously controlled! Teeps have different mind echoes than non-teeps!" She sighed with relief, "All I need to do is adapt a traditional hecko check."

Mai teased with a frown, "But you can't do that. It's not your job."

"Medical study most assuredly is my purview!"

Mai rolled onto her stomach, again propping her chin up on her hands, "Invent the device and use it successfully to rescue a situation. Some admiral will give you a pat on the back and take credit for inventing it."

Otoha got up, "Not all of them. Even if they did, I wouldn't care." She stared at her cycle with a smile.

Mai teased, "There aren't many people out in the corridors at this hour."
